Looking Forward to a New Year

Looking Forward to a New Year

So now we look to a new year, full of new ventures, the Annual Dinner and Citizen of the Year Award, the new Chamber location in downtown, 4th of July celebration, and of course the 26th Annual Vermont Apple Festival. Membership is growing, and our goal is to continue that growth.  Our new Board of Directors has been selected and I am looking forward to working with them.  Together we will make 2008 another successful year for the Springfield

Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

TRV and the River Valley Technical Center (RVTC) were recently awarded a grant from the Vermont Department of Labor that will enable us to provide a Career Awareness opportunity for every 8th grade student in the RVTC service area. These organizations will work closely with the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC), guidance counselors at regional middle schools and business partners from throughout the region, to provide a comprehensive Career Awareness experience for the students.

Components include every student’s participation in an interest and skills inventory provided by VSAC’s “Vermont Guidance Central” software and their home school’s guidance counselor(s). This will be followed by a field trip to RVTC in the spring, that will include motivational speakers, Learn to Earn activities provided by regional employers, a tour of RVTC, and follow-up information that will be mailed to the parents/guardians of each student.

Learn to Earn (L2E)

L2E is a workforce development program that markets career opportunities to students and their parents. Employers are trained to develop hands-on interactive presentations that they deliver to students. These presentations help students make the connection between what they learn in the classroom and how it is used in the real world. The program is designed to encourage high school and pre-high school students to enroll in higher level math, science and technology courses that will help prepare them for high tech jobs.

For more information about L2E or to learn how you, as an employer, can participate in these activities, contact TRV at 885-8314 or email mgelineau@vermontel

TIME TO NOMINATE SPRINGFIELD’S NEXT “CITIZEN OF THE YEAR”

The Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations until

January 2nd for the 2007 Citizen of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to an area resident who has demonstrated outstanding civic involvement.

It should be noted that the recipient does not have to be a Chamber member. In fact,

nominations are encouraged from the community at large. The Springfield region is very fortunate to have so many community minded citizens who give of themselves and their talents all through the year to various causes and organizations. This is the opportunity to recognize them and say thank you.

The 2006 Citizen of the Year was Marie Gelineau. Marie has been a vital part of Springfield for many years, being involved with a variety of community projects and organizations.

The 2007 Citizen of the Year will be announced and honored at the Chamber of Commerce’s 92nd Annual Meeting and Dinner, to be held January 25, 2008 at KJ’s.

Nomination forms are available at the Chamber office located at 14 Clinton Street, Springfield, Vermont or by calling 885-2779. Deadline for nominations is January 2, 2008.  Make your nomination today for the 2007 Citizen of the Year.
