2009 Spring Program & Summer Preview
Spring
is not that far away!! We hope you will
take the time to check out
our spring programs and
summer camp offerings. Also, check out
the new website for updates, information, and schedules. If there is something
that you don’t see that interests you, feel free to call us or e-mail us and
discuss it. We are always open to adding new programs to the recreation
landscape.

Baseball & Softball Registration for Grades K-6
Open
registration for youth baseball and softball will be held in the Parks and
Recreation office at the Community Center Monday, March 2nd-Friday, March 6th
and the week of Monday, March 9th-Friday, March 13th from 8AM-6PM on those
dates. March 13th will be the
registration deadline for these programs.
PLEASE help us plan our programs by enrolling your child during this 2
week period. There will be a $5.00 late
fee for any sign-ups after March 13th.
Uniform
Cost: There will be a non-refundable
charge for a uniform or T-shirt. Grades
K-2 will receive a T-shirt for a $10.00 fee.
Grades 3-6 will receive pants, shirt, hat, and socks for a $30.00
fee. You may also buy the uniform without
the pants for $20.00 if you already have pants.
KINDERGARTEN TEE-BALL: This program is open to kindergarten age children
who are 5 years old by March 31st. Practices and games are held at
PEEWEE BASEBALL: This program is for boys and girls in 1st & 2nd grade. Practices
and games are held at
3rd & 4th GRADE BASEBALL: Open to boys in 3rd & 4th grade. This is now
part of the Cal Ripken League and there will be games versus other towns.
Uniform pickup night is Tuesday, April 7th 7:00-8:00 PM at the Community
Center. Your child must be registered at one of the previously listed
registration dates to participate in this program.
5th & 6th GRADE BASEBALL: Open to boys in 5th & 6th grade. This is now
part of the Cal Ripken League and there will be game versus other towns. Uniform pickup night is Tuesday, April 7th
7:00-8:00 PM at the Community Center. Your child must be registered at one
of the previously listed dates to participate in this program.
7th GRADE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: Signups are held at
BABE RUTH BASEBALL:
3rd & 4th GRADE SOFTBALL: This program is for girls in 3rd & 4th grade.
They generally meet twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, with some
games against other towns. One or more teams may be formed depending upon the
number of participants. Uniform pickup night is Thursday, April 2nd, 7:00-8:00
PM at the Community Center. Your child must be registered at one of the
previously listed registrations dates to participate.
5th & 6th GRADE SOFTBALL: Open to all girls in 5th & 6th grade. They
generally meet two or three times a week, with games against other towns.
Uniform pickup night is Thursday, April 2nd 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Community
Center. Your child must be registered at one of the previously listed dates
to participate in this program.
SPRINGFIELD PARKS & RECREATION BASEBALL CLINIC: Varsity
Baseball coach Larry Partridge and his assistants will run a baseball clinic
for hitting, fielding, and pitching skills over April Vacation on Monday 20th,
Wednesday 22nd, and Friday the 24th from 10AM-12PM at Riverside Park for
players in grades 3rd-6th. It will be
$25 for the 3 days and the registration deadline is Wednesday, April 15th.

YOUTH SOCCER
This program is open to boys and girls in grades K-4,
and is held on Saturday mornings at
ADULT PROGRAMS
MENS BASKETBALL: Men’s basketball will continue
at the Community Center through the spring on Tuesday evenings from 7-9PM for
men 18 and older. Thursday evenings from
7-9PM will be for men 35 and older. Just show up to participate.
This is a free program.
SUMMER CO-ED VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE: Leagues and/or pick-up nights will be forming for the summer
time. Games will take place at
AEROBICS: April
Coen’s morning aerobics class will continue. Classes will be held on Monday’s, Wednesday’s,
and Friday’s from 7:45-8:45 AM at the Community Center. Fee is $3.00 per class. Call the Parks & Recreation Dept. to sign
up or just show up on above times.
LINE DANCING: Instructor Debbie Hays offers
different level of line dancing on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from
7:00-8:30PM at the Community Center.

program.

4TH
ANNUAL
We are currently working with race organizer Joe Cerniglia, business sponsors,
and a group of volunteers for this event. The race will
be held Sunday, May 3rd.
It will start at Joe’s Discount on Rt. 106. There will be a 4-mile race and a
half-mile fun run for children.
We’re very excited about this event and are looking
for volunteers to help out with all aspects of the
race. Please call the

information. There is a fee to
participate with all proceeds going to a different local charity each year.
2009
SUMMER
**This is a camp preview and all times and dates are
subject to change. Please check the
summer brochure for times and dates.
Sign-ups will begin on Friday, May 1st.
Please call Parks & Recreation to register or stop by the office on
ARTS & CRAFTS: This camp is directed again by Maureen Bolduc and
focuses on working with beads and pins, woodcraft, taking nature walks, and
other crafts. The camp is from June 22nd–June 26th. The camp is open to all children in grades
1-6. Cost is $85.00 and includes all materials. Time is 9:30 AM-12:30 PM and is
TBA on the location.
BASKETBALL-BOYS/GIRLS: These camps will be held the weeks of July 6th-10th at SHS for the
boys and July 13th –17th for the girls. The camp is open to boys and girls
entering grades 3-8. SHS girls varsity coach AJ
McAllister and his players will assist with the girl’s camp.
Boys Grades 3-5:

THEATRE:
This camp is for students in 3rd grade through 8th grade. It is directed by
Cindy Hughes and it will be held at the Park St. School Auditorium. It will be
held from July 6th-10th. Cost is $65.00
per student.
Grades: 3-8 Time: 12:30-3PM
TENNIS: There
will be two tennis camps again this year. The first will be July 6th-July 10th,
and the second will be July 27th-July 31st. SHS varsity coach Kim Lewis will
direct these camps. Sign up early because these camps fill up fast. Cost is
$40.00 for this camp.
6-10 Year Olds:

GYMNASTICS CAMPS: This camp is held at the Park St. School gym for
children ages 3-6 for the tots program and 7-16 for the older group. It includes tumbling, apparatus use, and
more. Jeff Knapp returns to instruct this very popular camp which overflows
with registrants every year. Please

DANCE CAMP:

KARATE: We again plan to offer a karate camp this summer at
the Park St. School gymnasium. This camp is scheduled for the week of July 27th-July
31st. Licensed instructor, 7th degree black belt, Ken
Bladyka, and brother of Andy, Parks & Rec. Director, will again direct this
camp.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: This camp will be held the week of August 3rd-7th at
the
FIELD HOCKEY: Ruth Haskell will direct
this camp open to students in 3rd grade through High School. Here’s your chance
to improve your skills and get ready for the upcoming season. The camp will be
held at the SHS field hockey field and will be in August. The exact week will
be announced in our Summer Camp brochure.
This camp also includes a t-shirt.

SPORTS FOR SQUIRTS: This one-week
program is designed to introduce 4 & 5 year old boys and girls to the
Fundamentals of a variety of sports possibly including soccer, basketball,
t-ball, hockey and football. Each day your child will play a different sport.
Let your child experiment in a fun non-competitive atmosphere. Each participant
will receive a T-shirt. This camp will run from Monday, August 10th-14th. Equipment except for baseball gloves are provided.

SWIM LESSONS: Swim lessons will again be offered this summer at the
town pool. Detailed information will be
provided in the summer brochure. We plan
on doing both morning and night lessons in all levels. We offer (3) three week
sessions and each session is 12 lessons.

Everyone over 50 is invited to attend with no charge
for regular activities and/or facility use. The Center is open Monday-Friday
from 8:00AM-4:00PM. Various programs are offered and include cribbage,
shuffleboard, Songsters, indoor walking, and strength training. Call the Center
for more information.
FREE SERVICES: Blood pressure screening is offered free the first Wednesday of every
month from 9:00-11:00 a.m.
SENIOR SPRING ATTIC
ROADRUNNERS:
Various trips are being offered to senior citizens. Center members get
priority, but the trips are open to non-members also. Stop into the center and
pick up a brochure on our trips for the year, or call the center at the above
phone number.

OTHER PROGRAMS
The following programs are recreational activities
offered by schools, private citizens, groups or companies. These programs are
not administered, supervised, sponsored or endorsed by the Town of
CARDIO CROSS TRAINING: This high/low impact class is held M/W/Th from 5:45-6:45 PM at the Community Center. It includes
kickboxing and step aerobics. A new session begins in March and lasts 8 weeks.
Another shorter session may be offered later in the spring pending interest.
