2010-11 Winter Program

         Winter is not that far away!!  We hope you will take the time to check out  our winter programs.  If there is something that you don’t see that interests you, feel free to call us or e-mail us and discuss it. We are always open to adding new programs to the recreation landscape.

GRADES 1-6 REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration for youth basketball, cheerleading, dance & wrestling will be held in the Parks and Recreation office between the hours of 8:00AM and 6:00PM, Monday, November 1st  through Friday, November 5th.  There will be a $5 late fee for registrations after Nov. 5th.

COACHES NEEDED
         Volunteer coaches are needed for all Parks and Recreation 1st -6th grade Programs. If you are interested please call Parks and Recreation or inquire within.

1st & 2nd GRADE BASKETBALL
The grades 1 and 2 basketball program which includes both practices and games will take place starting Saturday, Dec. 4th from 9-10 am at Park St. School.  Registration fee is $10.

3rd & 4th GRADE BASKETBALL
Grades 3 & 4 basketball will take place starting in November with practice times and dates to be announced.  The practices and home games will take place at the Community Center.  Registration fee is $20

5th & 6th GRADE BASKETBALL
Grades 5 & 6 boys and girls traveling basketball teams will be starting in November.  Practices will be at the Community Center with dates & times to be announced.  Registration fee is $25.

2nd - 6th GRADE WRESTLING
Grades 2-6 Wrestling will start on Thursday, December 2nd at Park St. School from 5:30
7PM.  Practices will be held 5:30-7PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season.  Registration fee is $20.00.  We are still looking for volunteer coaches for this program.  We would also like to offer 7th & 8th grade wrestling if we have a coach in place.

JUNIOR DANCE TEAM WORKSHOP
Kyla Beardsley will once again offer this dance team workshop to 6th-8th graders intrested in hip-hop dance. It will start on Friday, December 3rd from 4-5PM pm.  It will be an 8 week program.  There may be  other nights it will meet due to Holidays. The cost is $50.  Please register early.
 
PRE-SEASON HOOPS
This is for boys and girls in grades 3-6.  Work on your skills with  Varsity boys coach Pete Peck and JV coach Brian Rapanotti and Varsity girls coach Brodie Ladue  as well as some of the  youth coaches. Boys  will be on Tuesday, November 9th from 6:00-8:00PM and the girls will be Wednesday, November 10th  5:00-7:00PM at the Springfield High School gymnasium.

ELKS HOOP SHOOT   
This years annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be on Saturday, December 18th at Springfield High School . You can register when you sign up your child for basketball at the Parks and Recreation office.  The Elks hoop shoot will start at 9:00AM. This is open for children ages 8-13 and is a FREE event.  You can also register that morning at 8:30AM at SHS.

K.I.D.S.
1st and 2nd graders, get out of the cold this November and come to Park St. School on Wednesday nights from 5:00-6:00 pm to play a variety of sports which may include basketball, baseball, and soccer. This is a free program with a maximum number so please call Parks and Recreation to register before you come.  It will run for 4 weeks; Wed. November 3rd, 10th, 17th, and Tues. November 23rd. (School is closed Wed. 24th)

OPEN GYM AND GAME ROOM AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER
Come down to the Community Center after school starting on Monday, October 25th .  The Community Center will be open after school Mondays through Friday for open gym and game room use which includes pool, ping pong, air hockey, and foosball.   Hours may vary based on other programs. For more information please call Parks and Rec. at 885-2727.  NOTE:  Children under grade 5 must be accompanied by an adult for all open gym and game room hours.

OPEN GYM ON SATURDAYS & SCHOOL VACATIONS
Open Gym is held at the Community Center on Saturday afternoons from 1:00-4:00PM for grades K-8.  This will be starting in December. We will also be open during school vacations for open gym and game room use. For more information please call Parks and Recreation at 885-2727.  We are looking for volunteers to help with opening the gym on Saturdays.

COMMUNITY CENTER RENTALS
The Community Center is now booking rentals for weekend parties.  Take advantage of the gym which includes rollerskating and basketball. Also access of tables and chairs for eating, 6 lane “set your own pins” candlepin bowling, and extra space for your party.  Price:  Residents-$40 for 2 hrs/$60 for 3 hrs. Non-Residents-$50 for 2 hrs. and $75 for 3 hrs. There also is a $25 cash security deposit. To book a party please call Parks and Recreation at 885-2727 for information and availability.

PARENT/CHILD PLAY GROUP
This is for parents and preschool children on Fridays  from 9:00-10:15 am at the Community Center.  This class is designed for children to interact in a playgroup in activities that both parent and child can enjoy.

CHEERLEADING
Lisa Gibbons will once again run 3rd-5th Grade Cheerleading.  This will meet twice a week. Times and dates are TBA.  Price is $10 and this includes a t-shirt.

ICE SKATING
If the weather cooperates we plan to have ice-skating again this winter at the Commons and North Springfield. It takes several “floodings” to build up enough ice to skate on.  The huts will be open Fridays from 5:00-8:00PM, Saturdays 1-8 PM and Sundays from 1:00-5:00PM when the ice is good.  Other weekdays, and vacation hours, will be posted at the huts. We also need help to oversee the huts when they are open so please call if you might be interested in volunteering. Call the Parks and Recreation office to see if the rinks are suitable for skating and for availability or special events.
ADULT OPEN BASKETBALL

This is pickup basketball for non high-school students 18 and older. This program is held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00PM at the Community Center, and runs from now through March.  Just show up if you are interested.  Over 30 only will be on Thursdays from 7:00-9:00PM now through March.


ADULT COED VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE
This league plays Monday evenings at the Springfield High School gym. There will be two practice nights on Monday, November 1st, and November 8th from 7:00-9:00PM at the high school.  Teams will be allowed to practice together. Individuals may also form teams or find teams that may need additional players. Actual league play begins Monday, November 15th There may be “A” and “B” divisions depending on registrations. Cost is $40.00 per team. Registration deadline for teams will be Thursday, November 11th. You may register anytime by calling 885-2727.

LINE DANCING
Instructor Debbie Hays offers different levels of line dancing on starting with a beginners class on Monday, January 3rd, an intermediate class on Wednesday, January 5th, and an advanced beginner class on Thursday evening from 7:00-8:30PM at the Community Center. For more information call Deb at 886-8106.  SOFT-SOLED SHOES ARE REQUIRED. There is a fee to participate in this program.

YOGA
Emily Garganese runs this program designed to release tension, and reduce fatigue.  Classes will be at the Community Center.  Emily is asking for a $5 donation per class. For more information please call Emily at (802) 591-0065 for times.

INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL FOR SHS AND RMS
SHS students who do not play on a high school team are invited to play pick-up basketball every Monday from 3-4:15PM at the Community Center starting Nov. 29th.  Riverside students who do not play on the school teams are invited to play pick-up basketball every Tuesday from 3-4:15PM starting Nov. 30th.

Everyone age 50 and over is invited to participate. Weekly programs include line dancing, strength training, shuffleboard, card games and cribbage, walking in the gym club, ceramics, and Wednesday afternoon special events. Monthly schedules are available in the office.  The Center is open Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:00PM
Christmas Bazaar & Luncheon: Saturday, November 20th  9:00AM-1:00PM
Blood Pressure Screenings: Cost:  Free  
Time:   9:00AM the first Wednesday of every month.

OTHER PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES

The following programs are recreational activities offered by schools, groups, private citizens or companies. They are not administered, supervised, sponsored or endorsed by the Town of Springfield, or its Park and Recreation Department. These programs are listed as a community service to let community members know of additional recreational opportunities. Should you have any questions about these programs, or your ability to participate in these programs, you must contact the individuals conducting these activities directly. The Town is not involved in the operation of these programs in any way.
 
CARDIO CROSS TRAINING
Spice up your cardio workout by joining this program of step aerobics, kickboxing, and high/low impact aerobics. The next 8-week program begins Monday, November 15th, and is held Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 5:45-6:45PM at the Community Center. Another session starts on Monday, January 17th. Certified instructors Cathy Neronski team up to teach this program. Call Sandy Peplau at 885-7686 at the Springfield Hospital to register, or for more information. Cost is $66.00 for this program.

INDOOR SOCCER
Open gym soccer will be held again this winter in the SHS gymnasium.  Boys in grades 8-11 will meet on Saturday evenings beginning January 15th from 7-8:30PM.  Girls in grades 8-11 will start on Sunday, January 16th and go 5:30-7:00PM.. The high school players will continue after six weeks. Please call varsity boys soccer coach Paul Kendall at 885-2445 for more information.

FIRST AID/CPR CERTIFICATION

CRV STINGRAYS SWIM TEAM
The Connecticut River Valley Stingrays swim team welcomes new swimmers for the winter season. The team is open to area swimmers ages 6-19.  Practice is at the EdgarMay Recreation Center Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evening from 6:00-7:00PM for Level 1 and 6-7:30PM for level 2 pm with optional  practices Friday 5:30-6:30PM and Sundays 8:00-9:00AM. The Stingrays swim from October to mid-March competing mostly in meets within 45 minutes of Springfield.  For more information about joining the team, stop by the EdgarMay Health and Recreation Center or call Scott Bushway, Aquatics Director, at 885-2568.  Cost for level 1 $300/members, $350/non-members for the first swimmer in a family and $250/$300 for 2nd child.  Level 2 Cost is $375/member and $450/non-member.  The 2nd child for level 2 is $300/member and $375/non-member.  Scholarships are available.
