From beautiful lakes to the best in skiing
and golf, there’s plenty to do in Southern Windsor County.
During the winter months, guests and
residents can enjoy Okemo Mountain Resort and Ascutney Mountain Resort. There
are opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as
snowmobiling.
The area offers a delightful blend of shops,
restaurants and attractions with church bazaars, summer lawn concerts, country
fairs, craft fairs and community suppers that can be enjoyed by guests and
residents alike. In the summer, Crown Point Country Club and Okemo Valley Golf
Club both offer championship golf and golf instructional programs for the
beginner to the seasoned professional. Vacationers and residents find a
multitude of activities and pleasures awaiting them with boating on the lakes
and Connecticut River plus, swimming, bicycling, and hiking to enjoy our
beautiful area.
The Fall foliage season in Vermont treats
residents and visitors with the most spectacular outdoor display of color
unrivaled anywhere in the country. Over every hill and around every corner is
another breathtaking display.
Now matter what the season, Southern
Windsor County has fast become one of Vermont's four-season destinations.

Windsor, known as the "Birthplace of
Vermont" is where we'll start our tour of this region. You can still
visit the Old Constitution House where, on July 8, 1777, the constitution that
created the republic of Vermont was signed.
Another great stop is the American Precision Museum housing a collection of
hand and machine tools, measuring tools, typewriters, engines and guns as well
as the tools that made the guns. In nearby Brownsville is the Ascutney Mountain
Resort.
From there we're off to Springfield, the center of "Precision
Valley." Since the mid 1800’s, this community has celebrated its
“Heritage of Ingenuity” with a strong manufacturing and engineering history
that’s alive today to the celebration of the stars at Stellafane. The Black
River runs through the heart of the community, in the downtown area is Comtu
Falls where the river falls a total of 110 feet in an eighth of a mile.
Now we're off to Ludlow where only limited hints if its industrial and farming
years are evident today. The forest has reclaimed much of the land cleared by
lumbering and farming. Today it's a favorite destination of
Vacationers who flock to Okemo Mountain in winter and to our lakes, streams,
parks, and mountains in Spring, Summer, and Fall.
We continue on to Chester which is famed for its stone buildings. Look
beyond those buildings and you'll discover a Victorian village with many
comfortable and congenial inns, fine restaurants, service oriented shops and
cultural events that attract visitors from throughout the world.
This has been a whirlwind tour but these towns and areas lend themselves to
more leisurely visit where you can feel the stress melt away. We're sure
you will see why people come back here over and over.
So Much To Do
Southern Windsor County offers everything and any thing
for the lover of the outdoors and indoors alike. The simple pleasure of
canoeing on Lowell Lake, visiting Calvin Coolidge Homestead. Perhaps
you'd enjoy the vistas of the 80 foot Cascade Water Fall on Ascutney Mt.
Take a train ride on the Green Mt. Flyer offering scenic excursions all year
including the famous fall foliage trips.
When it comes to the outdoors there's nothing like the wait for the strike of a
trophy trout on the Black River. How about a cool plunge at Butter Milk Falls;
and of course there's the view of Colby Pond at sunset. There’s the Toonerville
Trail for biking and walking. In winter you can make first tracks at Okemo or
Ascutney ski areas.
Make this an historic visit on the Machine Tool Trail or the Old Constitution
House. Or, take a class in weaving at Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and
Crafts. Visit our classic Vermont cheese manufacturers, Crowley, Plymouth, and
Grafton.
Start your day with the warm, rich, smell of breakfast at one of our many inns
and sink into a big easy chair and enjoy the crackle of a fireplace at days
end. Hey, you deserve it, after all there's so much to do in Southern Windsor
County.
