Hiking
Springfield, Vermont is a great destination for hikers looking to explore the outdoors. With its rolling hills, lush forests, and beautiful mountain peaks, Vermont offers a variety of hiking trails that cater to all levels of experience. Here in Springfield, we have a number of parks, each with its own unique sights. You can take a walk around Muckross State Park and overlook Muckross Pond, or the Black River. Or take a hike on Red Loop at Hartness Park if you are looking for a workout. So come and explore the great outdoors in one of America’s most beautiful states.
Biking
Many of the parks and trails in Springfield work wonderfully for biking if you are looking to be off the road. However, if you are into road cycling, there are a number of loops and byways to check out. If you are interested in checking out Chester, our neighboring town, take a ride on the Chester-Springfield Loop, a short, moderately hilly paved loop of 19.9 Miles. If you want a much longer route, check out the Connecticut River Byway, a ride along the beautiful Connecticut River, the VT portion is 233 miles, with the whole route being 499 miles. There are a number of interesting historical sites dotting the route, as well as museums, farms, and many great dining and lodging
option.
Walking/Running
If you are looking to stay off the roads for your walk or run, we have two wonderful, mostly flat (at least for VT) multi-use trails. The Toonervile Trail is a ten-foot-wide paved trail, following the Black River, on the location of the former railroad. From end to end the trail is 3.2 miles. Most of the trail is separate from the cars on the main road, with the exception of a few crossings and some areas that travel on low-traffic roads. The North Springfield Lake/Springweather Nature Area has another multi-purpose trail, that welcomes bikers, walkers, runners, strollers, and horses. The trail can range in surfacing from gravel, mowed grass, sand, wood roads, or pavement. The lake is first and foremost flood prevention, at any point the area may be closed to be flooded, so please respect the gates.
Muckross State Park has several winding trails, great for a peaceful walk or run in nature. Speaking of nature, if you are interested in taking a short walk, and seeing an ecosystem unique to the area, check out the North Springfield Bog. Created by glaciers long ago this bog has no inlet or outlet and has remained undeveloped for 200 years. In 1989 a floating boardwalk was installed, allowing people to get closer to the over 50 species identified there (including wild cranberries!), just watch your step or you'll get wet.
Off-Roading
Springfield, Vermont is the perfect place for offroading and ATV adventures. With its winding trails, logging roads, hills, and mud pits, Springfield offers something for every offroading enthusiast. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, you can find a trail to suit your skill level. From easy terrain to more challenging routes, there's something for everyone. Sports
Springfield, Vermont is proud to have a variety of locations for all types of sports. Down by the outdoor town pool and football field are 6 tennis courts, 5 baseball diamonds, 2 open-air basketball courts, and a skatepark, as well as a soccer field and playground. Just a few minutes away in a different part of town we have the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center, which has an indoor heated pool, kiddie pool, and therapy pool. They also have a full gym of machines, free weights, open training spaces, and an outdoor climbing wall.
Fishing
Springfield, Vermont, located on the Connecticut River, offers an excellent opportunity for fishing enthusiasts to indulge in their favorite activity. Swimming

Snowshoeing
If you are looking for an activity to keep you moving this winter? Try out snowshoeing. It is a great way to enjoy the peacefulness of snow-covered land and breathe in some fresh air. Don't own snowshoes? Visit the Springfield Town Library to check out a pair with your library card.
Cross-Country Skiing
Downhill skiing may get all the attention over on the mountains but cross-country skiing rules around here. With cross-country skiing, you can tackle all sorts of new terrain and get an excellent full-body workout, not to mention the meditative sounds of your skis gliding through the snow and a peaceful chance to escape the crowds.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Skiing and Snowboarding are some of the most popular recreational winter activities in Vermont. With plenty of mountains to choose from you're sure to find one that fits your needs. All under an hour away we have Okemo Mountain, Pico, Magic Mountain, and Mount Sunapee. If you go a little farther you have Killington, Sugarbush, and Mad River Glen. As well as a couple of smaller ski tows locally that run on and off as the weather allows.
Ice Fishing
As in the summer, fishing is still a popular pastime in the winter. Once the ice gets thick enough on the Connecticut/Black River you will start to see fishing huts dot the white. It is always a good time out on the ice on nice days, a great chance to hang out with your family and catch some dinner. Not to mention you don't even need a boat for this type of fishing!
Maple Sugaring
Maple Sugaring is a quintessential experience of Spring in Vermont. As the days grow warmer and the nights stay chilly, the sap begins to run. We have a number of local sugar houses, either standalone or part of a larger farm, that open their doors for a few weekends of the season to let people come see the process and taste some of that liquid gold.
Stellaphane Clubhouse
Stellafane is the name of the Clubhouse, located the summit of Breezy Hill in Springfield, Vermont. It is also the name of the annual Stellafane Convention.
The Stellafane Clubhouse and Porter Turret Telescope and the land on the summit of Breezy hill comprise the Stellafane Observatory National Historic Landmark.
However, the term Stellafane has also evolved and generally refers to all the club's land and buildings on the summit of Breezy Hill, or to the club itself, which is properly named The Springfield Telescope Makers, Inc.
